Fragrances which evoke the scent of the Sea are often known as Oceanic perfumes, Aquatic perfumes and Marine fragrances. This article outlines the best Oceanic and Aquatic perfumes and links to where you can get them.

Oceanic perfumes tend to include fresh watery notes, Salt, Seaweed and green notes evoking the scent of coastal vegetation.

Table of Contents

Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt

Probably the most well-known Oceanic fragrance, Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt evokes the scent of salty Drift Wood arriving on the Sea shore. Sage and Seaweed create the aromatic scent of coastal vegetation, and a sharp Grapefruit note combines with the Salt to evoke the scent of a brisk sea breeze.

Jo Malone London Salty Amber Cologne

Jo Malone London also have their Salty Amber Cologne which is exactly as described; a Salty Amber Marine perfume. Seaweed and Cardamon create the green aromatic undertones, and these mix with salty sea breeze notes and an Amber undertone. Salty Amber and Wood Sage & Sea Salt are quite similar; the key difference being an Amber undertone rather than a Woody undertone.

Hermès Eau des Merveilles Bleue

The unique transparent and blue bottle of Hermès Eau des Merveilles Bleue represent the smell of the sea which the scent evokes. I think Eau des Merveilles Bleue has a lot of similarities with Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt; they’re both woody Oceanic fragrances, they’re both unisex and they’re both relatively light scents.

I definitely recommend Hermès Eau des Merveilles Bleue for humid weather as its refreshing and very clean feeling.

Hermès Un Jardin Sur La Lagune

The Hermès garden range of fragrance re-create the feeling of real-life gardens. Hermès Un Jardin Sur La Lagune (A Garden On The Lagoon) evokes the scent of a garden pool hidden behind a stone wall. The scent has an air of mystery and nostalgia; created by the use of the floral garden scents of Magnolia and Lily alongside an aquatic watery tone.

The Hermès garden fragrances are unisex and all have a different type of green fragrance note representing different gardens of the world.

Maison Margiela REPLICA Sailing Day

The Maison Margiela REPLICA fragrances are a collection of unisex scents which evoke real-life moments. I can testify that REPLICA Sailing Day really does smell like being out on the sea or a lake sailing a boat. I can smell the ocean and the scent of the sea wind in my hair; it’s very clever how it brings back sailing memories.

Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pure

The Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey fragrances are known for their strong Aquatic Liliy scent. Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pure focuses on an Oceanic note and the signature White Floral Lily which the brand is known for. The Eau de Parfum version of L’Eau d’Issey Pure has good lasting power and is probably one of the strongest Oceanic fragrances.

Juliette Has A Gun Ego Stratis

Juliette Has A Gun Ego Stratis Eau de Parfum is one of the newer releases from this niche fragrance brand. Initially, after a Cedar wood opening note which feels masculine, Ego Stratis becomes a super fresh unisex aquatic scent. Watermelon and Blueberry combine with Ambroxan to create a long lasting, yet refreshing fragrance which I highly recommend for men or women.

Ellis Brooklyn Salt

Ellis Brooklyn is a US fragrance brand created by a beauty journalist. Salt Eau de Parfum combines the scent of salty waves hitting the shore with a hint of tropical Tiare Flower.

There are lots of perfumes in the Ellis Brooklyn fragrance range, check out my review of them all here.

Ellis Brooklyn is available in the US at Ulta, the UK at Cult Beauty, Canada at Sephora, and Fresh Fragrances in Australia.

Michael Kors Turquoise

Michael Kors Turquoise is a super fresh fragrance ideal for hot summer weather. The Marine notes are accompanied by aquatic Water Lily, Cucumber and Lime to create a very fresh and slightly feminine summer scent.

Michael Kors Turquoise is discontinued by still available at Walmart and The Fragrance Shop.

L’Artisan Parfumeur Un Air de Bretagne

L’Artisan Parfumeur is a niche French fragrance brand which create some really unique scents (my article on their range). Un Air de Bretagne recreates the feeling of standing on Brittany (on the Northern French Coast). I’ve been there a few times and it’s quite windy; which means that you can really smell the scent of the ocean. Seaweed and Cyrpus fragrance notes really accurately evoke the scent of the French beaches, whilst sharp citrus notes create the sharp sting of the wind.

Tom Ford Costa Azzurra

Tom Ford Costa Azzurra is one of the heaviest Oceanic fragrances. Strong aromatic notes of Cardamon, Oud, Cyprus, Seaweed and Driftwood create a very strong sense of coastal vegetation. I think Costa Azzura combines a number of type of fragrances; oriental, aromatic, fresh and natural. It’s an expensive fragrance but is strong so you don’t need to use too much.

Bvlgari Aqva Marine

The original Bvlgari Aqva and Aqva Marine are lovely fresh men’s fragrances which have good lasting power and a classiness which I really like.

In the Marine versions a fresh citrus top note, Rosemary and Seaweed combine with Aquatic notes to create a masculine and fresh scent. The original Aqva has some deeper notes as well like Lavender and a woody undertone.

Calvin Klein Eternity Air For Men

Eternity Air For Men combines the typical Marine notes and Seaweed, alongside Juniper Berries and Lavender to create a fresh Oceanic and aromatic fragrance. It has some similarities with Bvlgari Aqva but can usually be found at a more affordable price!

Can’t believe how Sel Marin by Heeley did not make this list.
    Newer is not always better.
I hope the classics are here to stay and will keep on getting the love they deserve.
