What Is Pink Pepper?

Pink pepper, also known as Brazilian pepper or rose pepper, is a popular ingredient in perfumery. It is derived from the dried fruits of the Schinus molle or Schinus terebinthifolius trees. Despite its name, pink pepper is not a true member of the pepper family but is prized for its spicy and aromatic qualities.

What Does Pink Pepper Smell Like?

pink pepper is used as a fragrance note to add a unique, vibrant, and slightly spicy element to compositions. It provides a warm and peppery scent that can be both uplifting and invigorating. Here are a few ways pink pepper is used in perfumes:

  1. Top Note: Pink pepper is often used as a top note in perfumes, which means it is one of the first scents you experience when you apply the fragrance. Its fresh and zesty aroma can create an initial burst of energy and create a positive first impression.
  2. Spice Accents: Pink pepper can be used to enhance the spice or pepper aspects of a perfume. It adds depth and complexity to the fragrance, making it more interesting and captivating.
  3. Floral Complements: Pink pepper can also be used alongside floral notes to provide contrast and balance. Its spicy and slightly woody character can add a touch of intrigue to floral compositions, making them more vibrant and dynamic.
  4. Gourmand Fragrances: In gourmand perfumes, which are inspired by food and dessert aromas, pink pepper can be used to evoke a spicy or peppery culinary experience. It adds a subtle kick and piquancy to sweet and creamy compositions, creating an interesting contrast.

It’s important to note that pink pepper is just one component of a fragrance, and its usage and concentration can vary depending on the perfumer’s intention and the overall composition. It is often blended with other ingredients to create a harmonious scent profile and achieve the desired olfactory effect.

Kayali Sweet Diamond Pink Pepper | 25

The shimmering pink Sweet Diamond Pink Pepper 25 fragrance bottle stands out in my perfume collection. The fragrance combines pink pepper and rose along with a hint of saffron and a very feminine vanilla orchid note. Sweet Diamond Pink Pepper 25 Eau de Parfum is probably the most feminine fragrance in this list.

The Kayali fragrances are really high quality and last well, check out my article on the entire range.

Molton Brown Fiery Pink Pepper

Resonating with its name, Fiery Pink Pepper by Molten Brown is a spicy and aromatic fragrance with opening notes of pink pepper and tangerine and a heart of ginger, nutmeg and patchouli. The first spritz feels sharp, almost like a chili hit but then the other notes come through and it dries down very prettily. I found that it was sharp, cool and would be great for summer.

Chanel Chance Eau de Parfum

Despite having strong floral and patchouli notes, the pink pepper really stands out in Chanel Chance Eau de Parfum. The effect is not as sharp as one would expect, it creates a more subtle famine fragrance. The other notes are jasmine, patchouli and iris, which lend a gorgeous feel in contrast to the warm pink pepper.

Gucci Guilty

Gucci Guilty is a light floral fragrance with a soft spiciness from pink pepper and beautiful notes of peach and floral lilac. The pink pepper is not sharp in this but provides a layer of complexity to this scent. The addition of the wonderful floral and fruity notes complements the subtle pepper very well.

Carolina Herrara 212 Sexy

Ever tried a candy bar with chilli? I have and let me tell you, 212 Sexy by Carolina Herrara smells a lot like that combination. It does not have an actual chocolate note but there is a prominent vanilla, caramel and cotton candy fragrance which makes it so sugary sweet, and an equally interesting note of pink pepper which adds an incredible allure to this perfume.

YSL Elle

Pink pepper is assimilated into YSL Elle perfume as a main note along with fruity notes of litchi and lemon and floral patchouli. The pepper is felt mostly in the beginning and the dry down comprises mostly of a deepening floral and fruitiness. I like the piquant hit in the beginning and after it dissipates slightly, the lovely linger of sweetness.

Estée Lauder Pleasures

Estée Lauder Pleasures is a powerful floral fragrance with peony, lilac, lily and rose, which encompasses a hint of pink pepper that accentuates the florals, making the fragrance feel whole. It’s reminds me of the smell of nettles in the words, I think this is due to how the spicy floral comes through as the scent develops.

Twilly d’Hermès Eau Poivrée

A personal favourite of mine from the entire Twilly by Hermes range is the Twilly Eau Poivrée, which has a top note of pink pepper, heart of rose and a base of patchouli. The rose fades away after a bit of time, leaving the pink pepper and the patchouli behind which create a slight oriental feel to the fragrance. I think this has a slightly less modern but extremely sophisticated femininity and is good for warm climate.

4711 Acqua Colonia Pink Pepper and Grapefruit

4711 Acqua Colonia Pink Pepper and Grapefruit is a glamorous yet affordable perfume with a perfect blend of fruity grapefruit and piquant pink pepper which makes it both light, refreshing and spicy. It has great longevity and a layered feel. The simplicity of the scent is very attractive in how it lingers around me.

Montblanc Femme Individuelle

A vibrant, fresh and delicate fragrance is Montblanc Femme Individuelle. With notes of pink pepper, rose and patchouli, this perfume has a wonderfully clean feeling to it. There is a lot of pink pepper coming through but the rose and the patchouli add a rich depth that makes the scent mystical. I find that this is marvellous through the seasons.
